A walkthrough for parents

A real homework coaching session

See how Homework Coach helps a parent guide their child without simply giving away the answer.

One photo becomes a full coaching plan.

A parent uploads a Grade 4 fractions exercise. Homework Coach turns it into a calm step-by-step plan the parent can use at the kitchen table.

The homework

Grade 4
Topic
Equivalent fractions
Example exercise

Circle the fractions that are equal to 1/2:

2/43/64/82/3
Step 2

What your child is learning

Your child is learning that different fractions can represent the same amount. The goal is not to memorize answers, but to understand that 1/2, 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8 can all describe the same quantity.

Step 3

Say this first

“Imagine we have the same pizza. If I cut mine into 2 slices and take 1 slice, I have half. If I cut yours into 4 slices and you take 2 slices, you also have half. The slices are smaller, but the amount of pizza is the same.”
Step 4

Ask your child

  • 1

    Which fractions show exactly half?

  • 2

    Why is 2/4 the same as 1/2?

  • 3

    What happens if we cut the same pizza into 8 slices?

Step 5

Watch for this mistake

!

Children often think that the bigger number always means a bigger amount. For example, they may think 4/8 is bigger than 1/2 because 8 is bigger than 2. Gently bring them back to the idea of the same whole being cut into more pieces.

Step 6

Try this at home

Use a piece of paper, a pizza drawing, or Lego bricks. Split the same shape into 2 parts, then 4 parts, then 8 parts. Show that taking half of each shape gives the same amount.

Cut into 2
Half = 1 slice
Cut into 4
Half = 2 slices
Cut into 8
Half = 4 slices
Step 7

Now try the exercise together

Guide your child to circle:

2/43/64/8
Then ask

“How do you know they are all equal to 1/2?”

Step 8

If your child still does not understand

Explain with a picture

Draw the same circle three times. Split them into 2, 4 and 8 equal slices, then colour half of each.

Tell it as a story

Two friends share a pizza. One cuts it in 2, the other in 4. They still eat the same amount.

Use this approach →

Make it a game

Race to find three fractions equal to 1/2 using paper strips or Lego bricks.

Use this approach →
Aa

Use simpler words

Say 'same amount, more pieces'. Repeat it while pointing at each drawing.
